10 Things DC Comics Want You To Forget About Batman

7. He Founds His Parents' Killer

Actually, DC can't seem to quite make up their mind with this; it's been retconned too many times to count. In some versions of the classic Batman origin story, Joe Chill is the one who guns down Bruce Wayne's parents in back alley during a robbery gone wrong; sometimes it wasn't a mistake at all, but a hit put out by mob boss Lew Moxon; and in some cases, nobody knows who did the bad murder, and the perpetrator was never caught. In some versions, Chill was the first person Bruce targeted when he returned to Gotham as Batman, getting revenge on the very criminal that made him. In Year Two, he's forced to team up with his nemesis in order to take down another, much more dangerous vigilante. Following Zero Hour, the status quo was that Chill never existed, and so Bats' parents were just symbolically slaughtered by "a criminal". Since then it's been changed a couple more times. Not only does DC not want you to remember, but they can't actually remember which instance is canon itself.
