10 Things DC Comics Want You To Forget About Two-Face
7. When He Was Defender Of Gotham
The One Year Later storyline was one of the contemporary occasions where DC deigned to let Harvey Dent have plastic surgery and return to some sort of an ordinary life. Well, perhaps not ordinary, because during Batman's absence following the Infinite Crisis crossover Dent was entrusted with the safety of Gotham City. Which, as you can imagine, went about as well as entrusting the safety of a city to a known psychopath and murderer would do. Especially one you've just trained up in martial arts and detective skills. Satisfied with his abilities following a team-up against Mr Freeze and Firebug, Batman leaves the city in Dent's capable hands, only to return to a right old mess. A string of mysterious killings involving lesser members of his rogues gallery like KGBeast, Magpie, The Ventriloquist had occurred, each of them slain by a double-barrelled shotgun that was the preferred weapon of one Two-Face. Which isn't quite what the Dark Knight had in mind when he assured Dent that taking on a vigilante role would allow him to atone for his own past crimes. So it turns out Dent very much proves the "you can't teach an old supervillain new tricks" adage, as his time as Gotham's protector beneath a cowl was marred by his - ahem - more "extreme" methods of dealing with the scum that plague the city's streets. Batman's return exacerbates the re-emergence of his Two-Face persona and, when confronted over the villains' murders, Dent detonates a bomb and runs away without giving a real answer. An answer we never got and never will, since nobody has spoken of this little episode since.
