School is a formative experience for most people, and The Riddler is no exception. While at school a teacher asked her pupils to reassemble a puzzle; the student who did it the quickest would be declared the winner, and would receive a book filled with riddles and puzzles. Rather than using his storng intellect to win fairly, the young Edward Nigma secretly photographed the assembled puzzle in order to win quickly and easily. This set him on a dark path towards villainy, and it set in motion a chain of events which would see him become a source of constant torment for Batman. The defining moment in The Riddlers life was clearly this event it started his insatiable appetite for riddles, and it taught him that he could achieve recognition through less than reputable means. They say that crime never pays, but in the case of The Riddler he managed to win this school competition, inflating his ego and teaching him that he could gain anything he wanted through deviant means. Judging by the way the Riddler tried to live his life with this mantra, it looks like he learnt a valuable lesson from this school teacher.
