Star-Lord is known for his long leather jacket (which was shortened in the movie version) and his high-tech battle helmet which analyses strategy data, can improve his vision and regulates oxygen for him when he's in space. However, the character's first costume was very, very different to the one most people are familiar with. It was a black, tight-fitting full bodysuit which had a headpiece not unlike Nite Owl of the Watchmen. It had white and yellow trim - including yellow gloves - and a yellow belt that was kind of like Batman's without the gadgets. You would have to say that the more well-known costume is infinitely cooler.
