10 Things Everyone Always Gets Wrong About Comic Books
8. It's All Just Superheroes
Marvel and DC might specialise in the superhero genre, but that's not the only card hidden up their respective sleeves. Both publishers have specialised in horror, western, war and even romance comics in the past, and while superheroes have featured in those genres too, comics are not their unique preserve.
In actual fact, some of the most lauded works in the medium have absolutely nothing to do with superheroes. Maus, Art Spiegelman's written account of his father's experience during the Holocaust, was the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize.
Later works, such as The Walking Dead, Saga, Scott Pilgrim, Tank Girl and Fables would all experience immense success across various mediums, while the likes of Archie and Tales from the Crypt would do the same decades earlier.
Although it's easy to criticise superhero comics, given their immense popularity and the fact they're pretty much omnipresent, it's important to remember that they don't represent the be-all and end-all of the medium.
