Thanks to the exceptional work of the MCU, it's now pretty much set in stone that the Avengers are made up of a specific group of people, but if you read the comic books then you'll know that this really isn't the case.

This has never been truer than the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover which, if taken at face value, was nothing more than an excuse to have Marvel's two top teams go toe to toe in the ultimate throw down. However, scratch beneath the surface, and there's more to this story than meets the eye.

Throughout their history, the Avengers have had more members of the X-Men within their ranks than any other of Marvel's characters. This dates back to 1965 when both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver joined up in Avengers #16. And as time has gone on even more have found a home with Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Storm, Wolverine, Rogue - the list is seemingly endless, and whenever they need to bolster their numbers it's usually Professor X's School for Gifted Youngsters that they go to.

This has happened so often in fact that, at one point, they were even known as the Uncanny Avengers. Which is pretty much the ultimate mark of respect that could be handed out to their mutant brethren.
