10 Things Everyone Always Gets Wrong About The Avengers

7. They've Always Been Earth's Most Popular Heroes

Nowadays the Avengers are, arguably, the most popular superhero team on the planet. The Justice League may have something to say about that, but still, today, the Avengers are at the forefront of Marvel's efforts.

When Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first put the team together, it was from a selection of characters who weren't what you'd call successful. Sure, they were pulling in enough readers each month to justify their comics being kept in circulation, but it didn't take away from the fact that the original line up didn't really grab people and convince them that this was the next generation of Marvel's silver age.

In fact, when they first hit the stands they were going up against another of Stan and Jack's creation, the X-Men.

There is no doubt that the idea was to launch both around the same time and in doing so take the world by storm, it almost signed the death warrant for them as the X-Men caught fire with the general public. And it was that way for a very long time.

After all, back when Marvel was selling off their creations to anyone with a checkbook, it wasn't the Avengers that FOX bought now was it?
