10 Things Everyone Always Gets Wrong About Wolverine
10. He Was Supposed To Be An Actual Wolverine
That would be crazy, right? What even is a wolverine? Glad you asked. A wolverine is a carnivorous mammal, part of the same family as weasles, stoats and the rest of the villains out of the Wind In The Willows. A a solitary animal, it has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size, with the documented ability to kill prey many times larger than itself (thanks Wikipedia). All of which sounds a lot like Wolverine the X-Man. The last bit, that is, not being part of the same family as weasels. Although, did you know, he was originally supposed to be? A rumour that's spread ever since the character's rise to popularity states that co-creator Len Wein originally intended for Logan not to be a mutant that adopted the name of the Wolverine for striking personality similarities, but because he was literally a wolverine. One which had been genetically messed with thanks to a character called the High Evolutionary into being a humanoid. People like to trot this bit of trivia out all the time, but it's total hogwash. "I absolutely did not ever intend to make Logan a mutated wolverine," Wein has said. "I write stories about human beings, not evolved animals." But are they that different? Yes.
