10 Things Everyone Forgets About Captain America

4. He Was Almost 'Super American'

Much of Captain America's initial creation is filled with a bunch of narrowly avoided terrible names - such as Red Skull almost being given the imposing name of 'Hot Fudge'.

Captain America himself was not excluded from this treatment, as creator Joe Simon said he had first considered naming the hero 'Super American', before realising that roughly eighty percent of superheroes existing at the time had 'super' in their name - meaning that Cap would easily become lost in a sea of similarly named heroes.

As such, Captain America was instead born, as there were comparatively few heroes with the word Captain in their name. With Cap being such a cornerstone of Marvel now, it's undeniably shocking to remember that these are his origins, as they are far more precarious than you'd ever expect. That said, Super American was created in Fight Comics half a year after Captain America's first issue, and does now exist in the public domain - so if you ever wanted to create your own knock-off Captain America comic, you at least know where to start.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
