Justice Society of America First Appearance
DC Comics

The Justice Society of America was the first superhero team in comic book history, preceding the Justice League, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers by decades. The group was asked to protect the home front by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who knew that it would not be long before America would be forced into the European conflict that would become known as World War II.

With the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, those fears were realized. Roosevelt rechristened the team The Justice Battalion for the duration of the war, and it worked closely with the US Department of Defence. Its expanded membership included Doctor Mid-Mite, Wonder Woman, Starman, Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt, Black Canary, and Mr. Terrific, among others.

The Battalion was a subgroup of the wartime All-Star Squadron. This group consisted of every costumed superhero, mystery man or woman, or adventurer that was willing to defend their country against the Nazis and the Japanese forces. These include a number of solo adventurers, Uncle Sam’s Freedom Fighters, the Seven Soldiers of Victory, and the young heroes who the media would dub “The Young All-Stars”, including “Iron” Munro, Fury, and the Flying Fox.
