Years later, in reality, time-powered hero Waverider was able to release the Justice Society from their endless battle with Surtur. He is able to replace them with the interdimensional demon named Abraxis. The heroes had been kept young due to an encounter with the energies of magical villain Ian Karkull. Even well into their 70s, most of the JSA looked like they were in their 40s and fought like they were in their prime.

Sadly, this didn’t last long. Former hero and the meaner half of Hawk and Dove, Hank Hall had become the time-controlling villain Extant. He fought the JSA and removed the magics and energies that were keeping the Society young. Doctor Mid-Nite, Atom, Dr. Fate, and Hourman were killed outright and Johnny Thunder, Sandman, and Starman were too old to be heroes anymore.

Zero Hour brought a few interesting revelations The Starheart, the rock of the universe’s ambient magic that empowered Alan Scott turned him into a young man and he began calling himself Sentinel. Connecting to the Speed Force rejuvenated Jay Garrick and while it didn’t make him younger, he was still running around like a young man. Ted Grant revealed that he had a previously undisclosed “9 Lives” and could return from the dead. An android descendant of Hourman from the 853 Century traveled back in time and saved Rex Tyler one minute before his death. He kept Rex in a time-locked room that his son could visit.
