In JSA # 1, it all happened at the funeral of Wesley Doods, the Sandman. Doods had thrown himself off a mountain to keep the knowledge of the child who would be the next Doctor Fate from the Wizard Mordru. The living JSA members and several of the children of members who have taken up their mantle are in attendance when Jared Stevens, The Man Called Fate arrives with his Fate Knife stabbed in his back. Sanderson Hawkins, Sandman’s former sidekick Sandy, inherited his prophetic dreams. He gathered the still able JSA members at Doods’ mansion to find the “Fate Child.”

Despite Mordru’s best efforts, including resurrecting the undead Sons of Anubis, the Fate Child was born. He was Hector Hall, the son of Hawkman and the Infinity Inc. Hero known as the Silver Scarab. He was killed and became trapped in the mystical realm of the Dreaming. He was born into the body of an infant and mystically aged to adulthood so he could use the Helmet, Amulet, and Cape of Fate. After the team held a lengthy battle with Mordru, Fate trapped him in the Amulet of Anubis.

Seeing a need to train the next generation of heroes in the use of their powers and the history that proceeded them, the senior members of the JSA decided to reform the team for a new era. Hawkins, now going by Sand, had architect John Stewart redesign the Doods mansion to serve not only as a headquarters for the new Justice Society but as a museum that taught the public its long and storied history.
