6. The Time That He Beat Up Ronald Reagan

Marvel ComicsOkay, so that's a little hyperbolic, because Steve Rogers has never actually beaten up Ronald Reagan. He's just beaten up a character who, in the Marvel Universe, was the president of the United States around the same time Reagan was. And, yes, he did look a bit like Reagan, and admittedly, his speech patterns are based on the stilted delivery of a guy you can barely believe was a Hollywood actor, let alone a powerful politician. But besides all that, Captain America never actually beat up Ronald Reagan. Except he totally did. This story happened in the midst of a retreading of Engleheart and Buscema's Nomad thing, as Cap becomes disenchanted with the amount of control the government is exerting over his superheroism and begins to doubt the necessity of the missions they're sending him on. So he stops being Captain America for a while, instead taking the much less catchy name of US Agent and wearing a black costume. Because he's angsty. Like a teenager who just discovered the Sisters of Mercy for the first time. Except with a super soldier serum in their bloodstream. Anyway, that's all just window dressing to a story that sees the nihilistic Serpent Society releasing a toxin into Washington DC's water supply that turns anybody who drinks it into a gross scaly snake monster. And Reagan drinks it. And Cap has to turn up to make sure that the Commander in Chief doesn't do anything rash when he's been turned into an evil supervillain, which he succeeds in doing by bashing him around the head with a flagpole. Which has the stars and stripes on, obvs. Yeah, we don't hear about this one much these days.
