If you haven't seen The Defenders yet, this entry will be delving into spoiler-ific territory; so best click ahead if you want your viewing experience to remain spoiler-free.

Elodie Yung was one of the best bits about Daredevil season 2, so it was, initially, a tad disappointing to hear that she'd be returning in The Defenders as a mind-controlled antagonist, and not as the Elektra we all know and love.

The mind-control aspect was one of the big pitfalls that the series failed to avoid, and things were made all the more annoying by the fact that the twist lacked the punch to really make it stick. We don't have a clue what's going on inside the character's head when she killed Alexandra, or why she still continues to fight The Defenders after regaining her memories, because the show didn't feel it was worth explaining.

You can see the thought process behind the move, though. Elektra had infiltrated and taken over The Hand in the comics before, and the aforementioned Erynys clearly had some sort of influence in constructing an evil Elektra, but again, the character's motivations remain as dimly lit as the series' finale itself; no one can make out what is going on.

Given how predisposed the character is to cheating death both on and off the page, it's likely that this isn't the last we've seen of Yung's Elektra. That's a good thing, as far as Daredevil fans should be concerned, especially when you consider where season 3 is heading.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
