10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About The Hulk
6. Bruce Banner's Multiple Personalities
Referring to The Hulk as an alternate personality to Bruce Banner is a fairly standard and basic bit of pop culture psychoanalysis – doubly so if you're looking at the version of the character whose biography includes a father who beat his mother, causing Bruce to bottle up all his rage for years before it “manifested” in the form of the ticked-off Hulk.
Somewhat less subtle was a period in the nineties where even more alternate personalities were introduced for The Hulk, owing to Banner's weakening mental state. Smart Banner, cunning Grey Hulk, and angry Savage Hulk were all apparently bouncing around in his head, along with “Guilt Hulk”, who was just angry at his dad.
None of which are examples of how Dissociative Personality Disorder actually works. Eventually they all merged, and fought against “Devil Hulk”, a sadistic personality trying to destroy Banner from within. All that's a bit needlessly complicated for a big green guy who smashes things, and so were jettisoned in the noughties.
