10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Wolverine
8. He Used To Have Whiskers
Logan's original costume had a lot of elements that would go into his iconic look, the blue and yellow colour scheme, the black stripes and of course, the metal claws. It also had one of the goofiest masks ever designed.
Wolverine didn't actually debut as part of the X-Men. He first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180 and 181 as an agent of the Canadian government, sent to stop a fight between the Hulk and Wendigo. He was drawn by artist Herb Trimpe, who took the animal motif a bit too far and gave his mask some ridiculous looking whiskers that made Logan look like a Proto-Grumpy Cat. It wasn't until his next appearance in Giant-Size X-Men #1 that he got his more recognisable mask.
The original mask could even have been what gave rise to the popular rumour that Wolverine's original planned origin was that he was actually a wolverine and had been mutated by a villain called the High Evolutionary into a human. It's a pretty dumb idea and even writer Len Wein thought so, he has constantly denied that he ever intended that to be Logan's origin.
The best part about all of this is that real wolverines don't even have wiskers.
