Mutant powers aren't always present when a mutant is born in the Marvel comic book universe and often don't manifest for several years afterwards. En Sabah Nur's valiance in standing up to Rama-Tut (Kang the Conqueror), who had decimated ancient Egypt, earned him the attentions of the beautiful Nephri - the sister of Rama-Tut's general Ozymandias. However, after returning her affections, Nephri saw En Sabah Nur's true appearance and rejected him. The resulting rage forced his mutant abilities to come out.
