As established earlier on, the New Gods are not eternal and are capable of being killed, and being born as well. What is rarely discussed however, is that the origin of the Fourth World's inhabitants is closely tied to the development of Earth's different pantheons.

Countless eons ago on the world of Urgund, also known as Godworld, lived the Old Gods; beings who evolved over billions of years to become deific in nature. Following a long period of prosperity (the First to Third World) marked by a few moments of uncertainty (chief among them a prophecy tied to Mongul's Warworld), the heavenly beings waged an immensely destructive war on one another.

This conflict led to their demise, and from this a vast surge of primordial energy known as the Godwave emerged and swept across the universe, imbuing different planets with the ability to foster different pantheons. The remains of Urgund were eventually transformed into Apokolips and New Genesis, and thus began the era of the Fourth World.
