10 Things You Didn't Know About DC's New Gods

6. The Difference Between Mother Boxes And Father Boxes

DC The New Gods
DC Comics

Another seminal piece of New God iconography, Mother Boxes are part supercomputers and part living beings that facilitate everyday life in New Genesis. Developed by New Genesian inventor Himon, they are powered by the recurring Element X (and even the Source itself) and eventually transcended their original function to a degree where they are not fully understood by their users.

Some of the numerous abilities that these living machines have demonstrated include: teleportation via Boom Tubes, healing most injuries, energy manipulation, and power bestowal.

On the other hand, Father Boxes were developed in Apokolips and are generally more corrupting and destructive than their nurturing counterparts. They were developed by one of Darkseid's acolytes in order to turn Orion back to his father. Unlike Mother Boxes, Father Boxes are powered by the Anti-Life and feature a myriad of abilities that are capable of easily matching the New Genesian devices.

While their differences are known in comics spaces, most media (the DCEU in particular) have portrayed the Mother Boxes in a more antagonistic fashion and have not featured Father Boxes at all.
