10 Things You Didn't Know About The Mighty Thor

7. From Thunderer To Valkyrie

The Mighty Thor Jane Foster Death
Marvel Comics

One of the largest casualties of Malekith’s war on Midgard was the Valkyries, Asgard’s elite group of warrior women and the “Choosers of the Slain” who take deserving heroes to Valhalla. Jane accompanied the newly appointed All-Father Thor to the morgue to retrieve their corpses as he lamented that there was no way for the fallen to get to Valhalla without the Valkyrie.

Jane’s vambrace began to react and the spirit of Brunhilde, former Defender, Secret Avenger, and Valkyrie appeared before her. Brunhilde named her vambrace Undrjarn, the All Weapon, and asked her to take up the mantle of the Valkyrie. Knowing that it was truly important, Jane agreed and Brunhilde transformed Jane. As Valkyrie, she can see when someone’s death is near and she has the ability to teleport herself and others to the lands of the dead, like Valhalla.

In Valkyrie: Jane Foster #1, Jane’s first outing as Valkyrie was a bumpy one. She lost Valkyrie’s sword Dragonfang to a group of rollerblading thieves, who then lost the sword to the master assassin Bullseye. Armed with the sword and a flying horse, Bullseye fatally stabbed Heimdall from behind and battled Jane. Valkyrie sacrificed Dragonfang to defeat Bullseye and the horse decided to stay with Valkyrie. Jane agreed to take Heimdall to somewhere other than Valhalla to give him a final unique experience.
