The Sinister Six are classically associated with Spider-Man and being a scourge to the Webbed Wonder, but the fact is that some variations of the team were formed specifically as antagonists to other characters. For example, the Sinister Seven were formed by Hobgoblin to fight the Spider-Man foil Kaine, the Superior Six were formed by the Superior Spider-Man (Doctor Octopus' mind in Peter Parker's body) to act as superheroes (though they were being controlled by technological implants) and fought against the likes of the Masters of Evil, and the Sinister Sixteen were formed by Boomerang (by merging his existing Sinister Six with ten other villains) in order to steal valuables from another villain, the Chameleon.
