While in Chicago, James took criminology courses at the university at night while serving as a detective in the corrupt Chicago Homicide Unit during the day, though he and his wife Barbara were struggling to conceive their second child at this time. Jim also became a minor celebrity for a spell after foiling a late-night robbery attempt, and he was later assaulted by a corrupt cop and his buddies when investigating that officer’s activities.
