10 Times Comic Book Heroes Became Villains (In A Big Way)

4. Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight

A classic case of “the fans don’t like him so we don’t like him”, Hal Jordan went on a murder spree when DC saw Green Lantern comic sales weren’t looking so hot.

Coast City was utterly destroyed by a villain called Mongul, and Hal Jordan went completely insane; killing everything left, right and centre. He killed the Green Lantern Corps, he killed the all-powerful-yet-apparently-not-that-powerful Guardians of the Universe and he killed any hope of being seen as a half decent guy.

Taking the power of the Central Power Battery all for himself, this lunatic proclaimed he was now Parralax and began making life for everyone in the DC Universe pretty unbearable. Now, this was retconned later to say that he was possessed by the actual Parralax, the embodiment of fear itself and the kind of god of the Yellow Lantern Corps/Sinestro Corps, but this was originally Hal Jordan just being straight up evil.

In Blackest Night, when Hal Jordan was ‘back from the dead’ and talking to fellow coffin dodger Barry Allen, the two discussed their escape from death with the Green Lantern saying how everyone loved The Flash in death, after he’d saved the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor, while everyone was happy that he had died since he went out as a villain.
