10 Times Comic Book Heroes Became Villains (In A Big Way)
3. Cyclops: Avengers Vs X-Men
A pretty phenomenal story, Avengers vs X-Men sees the two teams start to butt heads when both of them want to take care of Hope Summers. She's considered the 'mutant messiah' by some due to her grand amount of power blowing up the X-Men’s mutant detecting machine - Cerebro - as soon as she was born. So yeah, she was a pretty big deal.
Like two parents duking it out to settle who loves the kid more, the two teams went to war. During the pandemonium that pesky ol’ cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force came about and decided it’d be hilarious to possess Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Magik and Namor. It turned them into what sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon - the Phoenix Five. One by one they’re depowered, with their Phoenix power going to the other hosts, until ol’ Scotty is the last one standing.
Of course, during their reign as what can only be called gods, the Phoenix Five did do some good. The problem is that they got out of touch with their humanity and started doing some pretty shady stuff. It’s Cyclops who took the cake; and then smashed it right into readers’ faces. He tore Professor X apart, when the guy was just trying to talk to him.
