10 Times Comic Book Villains Became Heroes (In A Big Way)

9. Magneto

Riddler Private Detective
Marvel Comics / Marco Checchetto

While his methods can be... less than agreeable at times (okay that might be putting it lightly), Magneto's cause is ultimately just. His main priority has always been to ensure the protection of mutantkind, and having suffered horrendous discrimination since he was just a child, it's more than a little understandable as to why he'd run out of patience with both Charles Xavier and humankind.

Even so, the vast majority of Magneto's history has been spent as a supervillain. You can't get away from ripping the adamantium from Wolverine's body, trying to destroy humanity god knows how many times or whatever other evil things the character has done in the past, no matter how tortured a life he's led.

That said, the path to redemption has always been there - a space where the character's radical principles mesh with the more moderate approach optioned by Xavier and the X-Men.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that Magneto has turned to heroics with increasing frequency over the years, or that he's been able to find a place alongside his old rivals in the X-Men.

With Moira X having laid the case for mutantkind's survival hinging on Magneto allying with Xavier and the rest of Earth's mutants, the character has finally been able to achieve some of his greatest goals - unite Earth's mutants, protect them from harm, and ensure their evolutionary gifts usher in a new era across the globe.
