10 Times Constantine Outsmarted Everyone

5. Got Gabriel Cast Out Of Heaven - Hellblazer #66

John Constantine Doctor Fate
DC Comics

There are many differences between the Constantine movie and the comic arc its central antagonist comes from. For one, in the movie, Gabriel is only half-angel, which is what lets him walk among humans unlike his more pure brethren. Another difference is that John getting him cast out of Heaven in the comics was less an improvised plan born under stress, and more a carefully planned scheme to wreak terrible vengeance on the angel.

When John finds out that Gabriel had been consorting with a white supremacist group that had recently killed the brother of a friend of his, he decides that angels should practice what they preach and be held to the standards they hold to us. And if a human who would do this loses their ticket to the pearly gates, why the hell should angels be any different?

First, he carefully manipulates Gabriel to put Doubt in his mind. With that done, he calls on another "friend" of his, who happens to be a succubus who owes him a favor, to seduce him. Once she has him where she wants him, she rips the angel's heart right out of his chest!

Gabriel in a panic rushes back up to Heaven to heal, but having slept with a succubus means that, well, he's kinda stepped over a non negotiable line for God, who slaps him back down to Earth, casting him out of Heaven forever.

And then Constantine saws the dude's wings off with a chainsaw. Because of course.
