One of the best parts of geek king Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run was the Dangerous story arc, where it was revealed that the Danger Room - the constantly-evolving assault course-cum-death trap the X-Men use to "train" - was actually a sentient being. After convincing a recently de-powered mutant to kill himself, controlling an old Sentinel to attack the X-Mansion and then trapping the entire student body, Danger took humanoid form and flew off to kill Professor Xavier. Why Xavier? Because it turns out that Xavier had long since been aware of the machine's becoming self-aware, but decided just not to mention it to anyone. After all, it was still doing a good job of training up his groups of mutant super-people, so what's the harm in enslaving a machine for decades? It's not like anybody was getting hurt right? Jerk.
