Before Wolverine became the de facto Marvel hero to have crossover with every other book they published (and before his death put a stop to that), it was Spider-Man who most often served as the delegate going over to boost the sales of his fellow books. He even crossed swords with the X-Men a few times technically, he is a mutant himself. A bunch of heroes appear in the Uncanny X-Men story that saw Kulan Gath, a sorcerer from the times of Conan The Barbarian, appear in modern-day Manhattan and transform it into something more befitting of his era. But whilst the Avengers tustled in the background, the wall crawler was on the front line. And he suffered a far worse fate than the mutants he was aligned with. Besides the indignity of Kulan referring to him as Man-Spider, the magical villain then tortured him at length and crucified him. He eventually collapsed off it (thanks to his lingering super strength) and died. Only Doctor Strange and Magick turning back time brought him back.
