10 Times Spider-Man Was The DARKEST Marvel Comic

6. Selling His Marriage To The Literal Devil - One More Day

Spider-Man Broken
Marvel Comics

An ambitious four-part comic book crossover, One More Day is one of the most emotionally layered stories Marvel has ever pumped out. Stacked full of helplessness and impossible decisions around every corner, it pulls no punches and picks up straight after Aunt May's shooting during the events of Civil War.

After desperately exhausting every avenue of saving her, Peter runs into a strange girl who reveals herself to be the evil demon, Mephisto. The demon assures Spidey that he can grant May a full recovery from her injury but, in return, he wants to erase Peter and Mary Jane's happy marriage.

An impossible decision for anyone to make, the story actually goes through with its dark premise and sees MJ and Peter's entire relationship wiped out. It was panned by critics and fans alike, so it's fair to say the overly-sombre tone was not enjoyable for readers to grind through following its release in 2007.

One More Day might be ambitious in trying to mature Pete with its emotional layering and impossible-to-make decisions, but messing with the cutest couple in Marvel comes so out of the blue and just ends up being needlessly bleak.
