10 Times The Justice League Went Way Too Far
4. Identity Crisis
DC's first attempt at a wide scale super-powered murder mystery was a flawed but somewhat fascinating character study that ultimately failed to take its heroes and mystery in a direction that respected their lore as well as observe narrative coherency.
Following the death of Sue Dibny, Elongated Man's wife, the League and larger superhero community pulls out the stops to apprehend the killer.
The primary suspect in the investigation is Doctor Light, due to the fact that he assaulted Dibny in the past. To avoid this from happening again, various Leaguers opted to have the villain mindwiped by Zatanna and in the process mindwiped Batman as well, due to his objection of the act.
The real killer is eventually apprehended but the League is deeply divided due to the questionable ethics of having the Dark Knight's memory erased in such a manner. This also unfortunately paints the heroes in a negative light and presents them as selfish and unlikable characters - a far cry from their more grounded but endearing portrayal in more traditional stories.
