10 Times The Past Came Back To Haunt Batman

1. He Created The Joker - The Killing Joke

Batman v Red Hood
DC Comics / Brian Bolland

Batman has personal ties with nearly every member of his rogue gallery. Not only was the Riddler, Poison Ivy, and Mister Freeze former employees of Wayne Enterprises, Bruce Wayne was acquainted with Harvey Dent and Jervis Tetch long before they were crazed criminals. Despite his good intentions, Bruce seems to create more evil than he stops.

Although Batman denies this, the best example of him begetting more evil than good is how he MAY have indirectly created the Joker.

Mere weeks after Batman donned his costume for the first time, the superhero found himself in the Ace Chemicals facility, chasing a minor criminal called the Red Hood. Batman's pursuit caused the Red Hood to stumble off a ledge, falling into a chemical vat below. It was the toxins in the container that transformed the Red Hood into the deranged and psychotic Joker, or at least, that's how the Clown Prince of Crime tells it.

Every time the Harlequin of Hate takes a life, Batman feels like he failed, not just because he didn't stop it but because he knows the Joker would have never existed if it wasn't for him. The fact Joker uses the same chemicals that created him for his own toxins proves how he loves reminding Batman - potentially - of his greatest mistake.
