10 Totally Unrealistic Relationships In Comics History
4. The Human Torch And Alicia Masters
It's difficult to find a good starting point when it comes to the romance between Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, and Alicia Masters. So the best place is probably right at the beginning. Alicia was introduced originally as a romantic possibility for the Thing, since she was blind and could therefore supposedly abide going out with a huge rock monster (Abby Arcane had no such excuse). Masters was one of the few bright spots for ol' Ben Grimm after his transformation, which for the most part made him feel like a hideous freak that people were more likely to recoil from than make out with. So in swans his supposed best friend, Johnny Storm, to sweep Alicia off her feet the way that best friends should never, ever do, especially not to friends who are huge rock monsters. Although, to be fair to Johnny, this was when The Thing was living on another planet where he could transform between human and rock monster at will, but it still feels like thoroughly un-bro-like behaviour, especially when Johnny and Alicia get married. If that wasn't enough awfulness in one relationship though, it gets worse, since it turns out Torch didn't marry the real Alicia Masters, but a shape-shifting Skrull called Lyja who had stolen Alicia's identity because comic books. Trust is the bedrock of any marriage, so it's no surprise that their marriage ended soon after and the real Alicia returned to Earth (only to then run off with the Silver Surfer, but that's another story. And one that manages to be less ridiculous than this).
