There's been one defining theme that leads Bruce Wayne and others to don the cowl and begin their fight against evil: tragedy. Most of them time this is through a family member or close friend being killed, and it was no different for the neo-future animated series Batman Beyond and its protagonist Terry McGinnis. While Terry was off fighting a gang of Jokerz an elderly Bruce Wayne, his father Warren McGinnis had gotten ahold of some incriminating information about his employer Derek Powers. Powers, who took over Wayne's company and renamed it Wayne-Powers, has been developing biological weapons for foreign nations. While Terry is accidentally discovering Bruce Wayne's bat-related secret, Powers discovers Warren has the evidence and sends men to retrieve it and kill Warren. When Terry gets home, he finds the police and his mother at the house. Fearing the worst, he runs in and finds his father's body, along with evidence suggesting it was an attack by the Jokerz. Several days later, Terry discovers the disc that contained the information on Powers. With almost no one to turn to, he goes back to Bruce Wayne's house, knowing that he'd want to know what his former company was up to. When Wayne discovers who's behind the biological weapons, Terry steals the Batsuit to go after Powers, and takes his first step as the new Batman.
