Xi’an Coy Manh is the mutant Karma, formerly of the New Mutants, but now grown up as a fully adult character who has at several times had a position of authority with the students of the Xavier School.

She’s a character who graduated and came through some tough times. From some pretty severe body and weight issues, to losing a limb, the character has been through the ringer and come out the other side stronger for it too. She’s also one of Marvel’s first openly lesbian characters, and a care giver to her siblings who fled Vietnam with her.

A mutant power of psychic possession may not be too flashy or showy, but all the other aspects of her character leave her an incredibly rich mine of storytelling content while still having the opportunity of having the ‘student come good’ figure that we keep seeing with Kitty Pryde. We’ve seen it several times with Pryde as a teacher, an advisor and now currently as the Headmaster of the school, which makes it feel like the Xavier School has only successfully trained and raised one student. Perhaps it is time to show another student who’s come through the wars to the other side.
