10 Unlikely (But Awesome) Lead Characters In Comics

9. Jessie Custer In Preacher

The PreacherVertigo/DCGarth Ennis' seminal 1995 title Preacher told us the story of Jessie Custer; a humble small town preacher possessed by Genesis, an infant product of an illicit and unnatural coupling of angel and demon and the most powerful being in all of existence. After accidentally killing his entire congregation and the rest of his town when he was first possessed, he set off on a trek across the country to find God, who abandoned Heaven when Genesis was born and make him answer for his crimes. You read that right, Jesse wants to kill God. Pretty heavy stuff for a man of the cloth to deal with then. What makes Custer an unlikely protagonist is that he is but a humble man of the cloth who is suddenly burdened with a ridiculous amount of power. It's like giving the guy who sits next to you at the office Superman's powers. He'd more than likely go careening off the rails, which Jesse does more than once. The whole series is a compelling read and with the news that the green light has been given for a Preacher TV show, now is the time to buy the whole thing and read it before it hits our screens. It's either that or fall prey to Game Of Throne syndrome as we better read comic book fans laugh at your reaction to every twist and turn.
