8. Dangerous Doorways

Baxter Building Fantastic Four
Marvel Comics

Over the years, Reed Richards has created, or acquired, some dangerous doorways and portals that can take the team far beyond the streets of New York City. One is Doctor Doom’s Time Platform. The team was initially forced to use it by Doom to travel to the past and retrieve Blackbeard’s treasure in order to save a kidnapped Invisible Girl. The platform now sits in one of Reed’s labs.

Reed created the Bridge to view and enter alternate realities to determine what went wrong in major events like the Civil War and the Skrull Invasion. The Mad Celestials of an alternate universe used the Bride to enter the 616 reality to conquer the universe, which caused Richards to dismantle the Bridge before later rebuilding it in secret. Another port born from a secret was the Forever Gate, a multidimensional gateway that grew from a Zero Force canister that Mister Fantastic had hidden in a deep basement of the old Baxter Building.

The most famous doorway to elsewhere, is the portal to the Negative Zone. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and first introduced in Fantastic Four #51, the first Negative Zone Portal was a gigantic Kirbyesque device to allow people to go into subspace. Reed entered the Negative Zone attached to a super-strong cable held by the Thing impostor Ricardo Jones.
