10 Vertigo Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die
1. Preacher: Gone To Texas
If you want to talk about scathing cultural commentary, arguably no Vertigo comic out there did it better than Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher.
Ennis is certainly no stranger to the world of supernatural anti-heroes, as the author had an exceptional run writing for Hellblazer. That said, Ennis did some of his very best work when he was penning the exploits of an arcane character of his own creation: the good Reverend Jesse Custer.
The trek Jesse and his cohorts take across the United States is not only one that even Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo would think twice about, but is also sure to resonate with those who witness chaos comparable to that experienced by the team on a regular basis.
By the time you reach the end of book one, and see all that Jesse and his friends have seen, you'll understand exactly why they want God himself to answer for the absurd amount of suffering on display.
This deeply sardonic, satirical, shocking and sarcastic tale from Ellis and Dillon is chock-full of exceptional storytelling and provocative imagery. So much so that anyone interested in Vertigo's catalog would be doing themselves a great disservice by not making it one of the first titles they check out.
