10 Vertigo Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die

7. Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol

Hellblazer Phantom Pains
DC Comics

The Doom Patrol have been a part of DC's lineup for quite some time, dating all the way back to the early 1960s. However, one of the bizarre superhero team's most defining runs came in the late eighties and early nineties from the mind of veteran writer Grant Morrison.

The Doom Patrol's proverbial rebirth under the Vertigo imprint with Morrison at the helm resulted in some of the titular team's best and most bizarre stories. After all, the team was plenty weird to begin with. So, handing the project over to an exceptionally imaginative scribe like Morrison was sure to result in something truly mystifying.

Between Robotman's temperament, Crazy Jane's wide array of abilities and Negative Man just being Negative Man, not to mention the rest of the central characters and all the surreal things they must go up against, it's hard to hold a candle to the delightful madness on display in this series.

Other writers have also done an exceptional job at capturing the aggressively weird side of the Doom Patrol, most notably Gerard Way under DC's Young Animal imprint. But at the end of the day, it's Morrison's Doom Patrol that has to be seen as the most definitive.
