10 Vertigo Graphic Novels You Must Read Before You Die

8. The Horrorist

Hellblazer Phantom Pains
DC Comics

Jamie Delano and David Lloyd's The Horrorist is quite possibly the darkest, most cynical Constantine story ever told. That's not to say being darker automatically makes a comic better, but in this instance, it works incredibly well.

This story finds Constantine at one of the lowest possible points in his life, which, as anyone familiar with the character knows, is certainly saying a lot. Desperate simply to feel something again, he begins searching for a woman named Angel who has become a Horrorist (i.e., a redistributor of grief).

Along Angel's own cross-country tour, as it were, she begins shining a light on the rampant suffering present in the world to those who are too busy to care, leaving some rather heinous results in her wake.

Between Delano's incredible voice and experience writing for Constantine, Lloyd's distinct, eye-catching art style, as well as the book's relentlessly grim message, The Horrorist is a comic that not only hits all the right notes, but does so in an incredibly provocative way.
