If you ask anyone who Doom’s biggest nemesis is, they’ll tell you it’s Reed Richards, AKA Mr. Fantastic. They are wrong. It’s actually Marvel’s version of the devil, Mephisto.

The rivalry between the Devil and the ruler of Latveria has its roots with Doom's mother, a witch who had sold her soul to the Lord of the Underworld to help overthrow a tyrant. Doom's origin is even intertwined with Mephisto, as the experiment that caused his face to become scarred was actually an attempt to enter Mephisto's realm.

The Demon with Hell's most fabulous collar-cape combo was so impressed with Doom gumption that he allowed Doom to fight the forces of Hell once a year for his mother's eternal soul. Although he failed many, many times, Doom eventually managed to steal his Mother's soul from Mephisto while Doctor Strange distracted him in 'Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph & Torment'.

Although this may not seem like much of a victory, Mephisto admits that Doom did defeat him in 'Infamous Iron Man #12', going so far as to say that the defeat ruined his reputation with the other Hell-Lords and is still made fun of due to it even to this day.
