10 Weird Alternate Versions Of Spider-Man
9. Webslinger
Avataars: Covenant of the Shield was an attempt by Marvel to reimagine its heroes as part of a Dungeons and Dragons Lite fantasy series. The book was a pretty huge bomb, the initial 12 issue series was cut down to a three issue prologue and any plans for sequels were cancelled when it sold poorly.
Apart from the awesome renaming of Thing and Hulk to Count Crag and Greenskyn Smashtroll, the series was pretty forgettable. It did also give us a pretty weird version of Spider-Man though.
Webslinger was a boy who was given the strength and speed of a spider by the mysterious Widow of the Web on the condition that he didn't use his powers for his own interest. However, he broke that vow when he saved his uncle from a robber. In retaliation, the Widow turned him into a humanoid spider monster and tasked him with protecting the Webwood.
Apart from looking strange as hell (the lack of trousers is especially disturbing), what really makes this Spider-Man stand out is how his origin seems like such a pointlessly cruel twist on Peter Parker's origin story.
It's especially odd when you consider that the rest of the Avataars stick pretty close to their original forms, Steve Rogers is a shield wielding knight, Tony Stark has a giant suit of armour and Scarlet Witch is literally just a witch.
