10 Weird Alternate Versions Of Spider-Man
3. Spider-Man: Reign
One of the best Batman stories of all time is The Dark Knight Returns, the story of an elderly Bruce Wayne taking up the mantle one last time. Spider-Man tried to do the same thing... the results were mixed.
Spider-Man: Reign is the story of an elderly widowed Peter Parker who lives in a dystopian New York. The entire city is kept under lockdown by the despotic Mayor Waters, who runs a police state which has traded civil liberties for safety. In order to bring down Waters' regime, Peter has to come back out of retirement as Spider-Man
Apart from it not really feeling like a Spider-Man story, it's mostly a pretty solid tale. However, the comic is infamous for one specific scene. Peter is kidnapped by Doctor Octopus' tentacles which had been programmed by a now dead Otto to help him get his old costume back. The costume had been buried with Mary Jane and, while retrieving it, Peter was forced to confront his guilt over his wife's death.
To cut a long story short, MJ got cancer from Peter's "bodily fluids".
It's a scene that's supposed to come off as tragic, but the whole idea of Spider-Man having radioactive spider-splooge is just too weird and hilarious to ever take seriously.
