10 Weird Moments You Forgot Happened In Iconic Comics
1. Wolverine Encounters A Leprechaun
The most famous X-Men story is The Dark Phoenix Saga, where Jean Grey becomes corrupted by a godlike entity called The Phoenix Force. Many die-hard fans remember X-Men #101 as the issue where Jean Grey first bonded with the entity which dramatically magnified her powers. This was also the first issue where Wolverine first admitted that he was in love with Jean.
As soon as Jean absorbs the Phoenix's power, she passes out from exhaustion. The X-Men founder, Professor Charles Xavier believes this is an ideal time to take the team on vacation. Xavier's friend, Sean Cassidy said he just inherited a castle in Ireland so they should join him if they are looking for a holiday. It turns out that the whole thing was a trap so Cassidy's brother, Black Tom could capture the X-Men.
During a scuffle with Black Tom's ally, Juggernaut, Wolverine gets hurled away from the fight. As he is preparing to rejoin his team, he suddenly bumps into a leprechaun called Padraic. Not only is Wolverine baffled to see the fabled creature but the little pixie refers to him by the name, Logan. What's really weird about this confrontation is this is the first time Wolverine has EVER been referred to as Logan. Readers never knew what his name was... and they learned it from a freaking leprechaun.
Bizarrely, Wolverine never mentions this again... even when he meets leprechauns in other comics. That's right. The X-Men writers devised MORE stories where Wolverine encounters mythical Irish elves. On purpose. In Uncanny X-Men First Class #8, Wolverine was attacked by 357 leprechauns. Justifiably, Logan cried out "This is the dumbest fight I have ever been in." Yes. Yes, it was.
