Wolverine is nigh immortal, and it's all thanks to that pesky healing factor. Doesn't matter how you kill him - if it's a limb or vital organ, the Wolverine can grow it back.

However, there were loopholes for writers to adopt. After all, how could Logan survive being hurled into the sun, or, say, being crushed under the weight of an insurmountable mass? Sure, the character has come back from absurd injuries in the past (neither decapitation or a nuclear explosion can put this mutant down), but there are ways of getting around it, as writer Charles Soule discovered in 2015.

In the aptly titled Death of Wolverine, Soule and artists Steve McNiven and the late Justin Ponsor concocted a terrifyingly tragic way of permanently killing the character - at least for a few years - by drowning him in adamantium.

Unable to breathe and encased in a rapidly cooling indestructible metal, Logan is unable to recover and perishes then and there. The character would return a few years later, but there's no getting away from how shocking the moment was when it hit stands four years ago.
