Darkseid War was a massive event with a sprawling storyline and several key arcs. It comes as no surprise that one of the key figures in the battle against Darkseid was the Man of Steel. Unfortunately for Supes, he would go on to experience one of his worst hours during this conflict.

At one point, both Superman and Lex Luthor, who had been serving as an ally to the Justice League at that point, find themselves on Apokolips. Normally one would expect Superman to absolutely lay waste to Darkseid’s Parademon hordes. However, as deduced by Luthor, the air on Apokolips had begun to poison Kel-El.

Darkseid had the option of calling for a fatal strike, one that would eliminate one of his greatest ever adversaries. But the evil tyrant had something even more sinister on his mind. He refused to issue a kill order, instead opting to have his minions wear down Superman in an endless struggle. His goal was not to kill Superman, but to show him that there was no hope of victory. In other words, he was not just satisfied with taking the man’s life, he wanted to break his soul.
