10 Worst Ever Members Of The Justice League
5. Mystek
The story of Mystek is one of those weird examples of just how much the course of a comic can be messed up by behind the scenes problems.
What we know about the character can be summed up pretty easily. She was a Korean-American woman called Seong but went by the name Jennifer Barclay, her family had been involved somehow with a shady government agency, she could fire energy blasts and she wore a sculpted costume that made her look like a man to hide her identity.
The character was created for Christopher Priest and was introduced in his series The Ray while he was negotiating with DC to have Mystek star in her own creator-owned series. To generate interest in her, Priest was told to make her a part of his other book Justice League Task Force and so she joined the team. However, DC then passed on acquiring the character so he decided to just kill off Mystek instead.
And how did Mystek die? Did she sacrifice herself to save the world? Did she take a bullet for a teammate? No. What happened to Mystek is that she got in a cramped spaceship, only to suddenly remember she had claustrophobia and died accidentally blasting herself into space.
A horrible death for a character who never really got a fair shot at life.
