9. He Dumped Her In Chemicals
Traditionally, Harleen Quinzel's transformation into Harley Quinn was her choice (although how much choice she really had is debatable) and only consisted of a chequered jumpsuit and some white face paint.
While she certainly looked the part of the Joker's sidekick, it was a change that was only a new set of clothes and some wet wipes away from being undone.
However, when the line wide reboot known as the New 52 completely changed continuity, Harley's origin was updated as well. She was still a psychologist who fell in love with the Joker, but, instead of choosing to become his sidekick, Joker decided that he needed something to prove her complete commitment to him and turned her into Harley Quinn by throwing her into the same vat of chemicals that he had fallen in.
The chemicals had a similar effect on her as they had on him, bleaching her skin and changing her hair from blonde to black and red.
More recently, Harley has finally broken off all ties from her abusive lover and become her own independent person. Thanks to the Joker's cruelty though, she now has a constant reminder of what he did to her, one that she'll never be able to hide or fully cover up.
