In 1992 Frank Castle did the unthinkable: he killed Captain America.

While investigating a drug ring The Punisher is given some Intel that seems to show that corruption is rife in Washington and it goes straight to the top, with Steve Rogers himself implicated in the conspiracy.

Taking this as a personal kick in the family jewels he decides that justice must be done and proceeds to put a snipers bullet straight into the chest of the other Big Blue Boy Scout. As he lays on a hospital gurney Cap begs Nick Fury to let him die, and in doing so creates one of the most WTF moments that Marvel have ever been responsible for.

Of course it turns out to be all a ruse as nobody stays dead in comic books for very long, and by faking his own death it gives Steve Rogers the chance to go undercover and catch the real people behind the master plan. However, the initial shock of seeing Punisher kill such an iconic character, combined with the outpouring of emotion at his funeral, will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
