10 X-Men Characters Writers Need To Stop Using
6. Magma
Born in Nova Roma, a secret Roman colony in the middle of the Amazon Rain Forest, Magma is a mutant with volcanic based powers. Sounds pretty cool right? Well, unfortunately her character has never really stuck the landing. Of all the original run New Mutants characters, Amara has always felt like an afterthought on a team with plenty of colourful personalities.
Despite her near-40-year existence, she has rarely been at the forefront of X-fan’s thoughts. A big part of that is the fact that Magma has never really been shown to have a deep connection with her teammates. In fact, the mutant she seems to have become most linked with is with master manipulator Empath of the rival Hellions. The less said about that relationship the better, but I’ll assure you, it’s loads of yuck.
Magma was eventually written out of New Mutants in its original run and appeared infrequently until the early 2000s when she was literally crucified. Writers clearly felt bad for her and her gross mistreatment over the years as they brought her back with New Mutant’s second volume where she reunited with her old classmates. Magma is still hanging around the periphery of X-books and every time a new New Mutants book is released, she seems to resurface with it. For both her sake and our own hopefully future writers will forget to invite Amara to the reunion.
