11 Essential Comics To Read If You Love Batman

11. Year One

Batman Year One
DC Comics

Released soon after that other seminal Frank Miller classic, Year One reimagined The Dark Knight's origins and retroactively changed them for mainstream DC continuity.

Miller and artist Dave Mazzucchelli had previously made waves at Marvel with the equally seminal Daredevil: Born Again, and so the duo were a fine fit for the Caped Crusader. The story itself follows Batman's first year as a crime fighter, and fans of the character will no doubt have felt its influence in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, with both films having borrowed heavily from many of the themes and elements of the Miller classic.

It's a stand alone story, and probably more of a Gordon one than a Batman one, but an essential read nonetheless. The above scene (taken from the book's second or third issue) is also up there with the greatest Batman moments ever, so that's cause to check it out too.
